  • Due to warmer-than-normal January weather and recent rains, crawfish populations are growing to support upcoming carnival parade parties, with expert Mark Shirley noting that despite a delayed autumn emergence, the mudbugs will thrive + boost Mardi Gras celebrations.  WWL-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors say flu and COVID cases are surging in Louisiana today because a new flu strain and low vaccination rates challenge health care providers, and the situation is expected to worsen after Mardi Gras events.   • Three Northlake Christian athletes finalized college choices on Jan. 6, as volleyball star Khloe Duncan committed to Division III Millsaps College while baseball players Max Millet + Luke McAdams chose Nunez CC and East Mississippi CC, reflecting each student's connection to team culture and academics.  The Times-Picayune
  • Hunter Bonvillain, elevated to head coach on Jan. 7, vowed to lead the Titans with a focus on fundamentals — and attack the difficult — while keeping the long-time assistant coaches on the staff.
