CULTURE NEWS

  • Slidell City Council approved a deal letting Save The St. Tammany Chahta Tribe use the city-owned Train Depot for a museum in a (1,400) sqft section on Front St. The museum will show local American Indian history and host public events, bringing education and tourism to the area.  The Times-Picayune
  • The Arc's Mardi Gras Recycling Store is now open to support local carnival celebrations by offering reusable supplies and eco-friendly options for festive traditions. The store aims to help residents plan sustainable events throughout carnival season.  FOX 8
  • Temple Sinai will host a community musical service to honor Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 19 in Slidell as local musicians perform tribute pieces celebrating his legacy.  FOX 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At SSA’s signing day on Jan. 15, three athletes—soccer standout Reese Dantin, basketball guard Victoria Darrah and volleyball star Mia Casi—marked a milestone by signing with UAB, Division II Spring Hill and Centre College as they prepare for college sports.  The Times-Picayune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • LDEQ crews are continuing long-term remediation after the August Smitty's Supply explosion, using booms and pads to remove oil from affected ponds. A watchdog group asserts that the EPA did not report all toxins and will host a town hall in Roseland after Mardi Gras to present their findings.  WDSU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Slidell are demanding refunds and real billing based on usage as Magnolia Water faces complaints after boil water advisories, supported by a petition (over 3,000 signatures) and calls to halt new takeovers until repairs finish; improved water quality is part of a $62 million phase 2 grant project.  WWL-TV
