- ➤ On Jan. 12, two Leadership Northshore teams introduced projects to improve St. Tammany — one using eco-art from Trashformation with a spring cleanup and City Hall exhibit, and the other planning water safety signage with QR codes near Carr Drive. The Times-Picayune
- ➤ James Robinson, 104 and Louisiana’s oldest WWII veteran, continues to use ham radio at his weekly breakfast meeting in Covington. He adapts modern tech to send his messages (a nod to decades of service) while crediting his long life to healthy habits. The Times-Picayune
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ High school marching bands are energizing Mardi Gras as they perform in multiple St. Tammany parades to raise funds and promote community outreach — Northshore High School director Joshua Stearman said the lively performances bring residents together. The Times-Picayune
- ➤ Olivia Wong, a Mandeville native celebrated for her rise in dance and work with top artists (including Blackpink), will finish her international tour in Hong Kong as she flies her parents first class to join her final show. The Times-Picayune
- ➤ The Mardi Gras 2026 parade schedule is released — in Slidell, Krewe of Titans will parade Friday, Jan. 30 at 6:30 p.m. while Krewe of Bilge’s boat event and Krewe of Poseidon will follow Saturday, Jan. 31. WWL-TV
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A new Pelican Institute report showed Louisiana’s GDP grew by 4% in Q2 2025 after Gov. Landry signed tax reforms in 2024. The report warned outmigration and job growth might be eased by lowering state sales tax and property taxes (Louisiana moved up six spots in Tax Foundation rankings). Louisiana Radio Network
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Fontainebleau student Owen Esté was honored by the St. Tammany Parish School Board on Jan. 15 and will join the Senate page program in Washington, D.C. starting Jan. 26 as he attends classes and works on Capitol Hill through early summer. The Times-Picayune
- ➤ The Northshore Humane Society will host nine week-long, animal-themed summer camps for kids ages 6 to 11, featuring interactive games + guest speaker sessions. Families are encouraged to sign up online as some camp sessions have already filled. The Times-Picayune
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A federal appeals court will hear oral arguments Tuesday, Jan. 27 on Louisiana’s law requiring public schools to display the Ten Commandments. The case, brought by a multifaith group & consolidated with a similar Texas challenge, may be the final step before a Supreme Court review. The Times-Picayune
- ➤ Ronnie Simpson was elected chairman of the St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce at its Jan. 13 installation luncheon at The Greystone (with over 200 members attending). Simpson, assistant vice president for community and public affairs at Ochsner Health, succeeds Carrie Calvin in the one-year term. The Times-Picayune
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Adult Critical Care Unit at St. Tammany Parish Hospital received a gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses for 2025. It is one of three Louisiana units honored for improved patient outcomes (including a 77% drop in hospital-acquired pressure injuries) and enhanced safety measures. AN17
- ➤ Manning Family Children's Hospital accepted a $31,000 grant from Baskin-Robbins to fund Walker's Imaginarium, a 15,000 sqft child enrichment center set to open in fall. The hospital also named 9 year old Abigail Fisher its newest pint sized hero for her strength during treatment. WDSU
