COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Construction has begun on the Slidell Fishing Pier as officials rebuild it with steel for greater resilience after Hurricane Ida damaged its approach; the $3 million project is set to reopen early next year (future upgrades include a boat dock).  WDSU
  • United Way of Northeast Louisiana launched its Family Relief Effort to help households impacted by a recent ice storm, receiving 2,000 financial assistance applications on Saturday morning (most were for grocery support). The organization calls for local donations to help families cover essential expenses.  Louisiana Radio Network
  • The Slidell Women’s Civic Club will honor 75 years of volunteerism by hosting its Blue and Silver 75th Anniversary Krewe of Slidellians Bal Masque on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Harbor Center. Over 450 community members will enjoy a tribute ceremony and special performances honoring past and present service.  The Times-Picayune

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mandeville’s Krewe of Eve will roll on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. with its Forty and Fabulous theme, led by longtime board members who helped launch the group — the parade features 70 to 80 decorated floats with signature glittered apples and LED throws for its Ruby Anniversary.  The Times-Picayune
  • Five renowned jazz musicians from St. Tammany and New Orleans will perform at 6 p.m. on Feb. 21 at Fuhrmann Auditorium in Covington to celebrate African American History Month with interactive sets and classic tunes — marking their first joint performance on this stage.  The Times-Picayune
  • The Krewe of Titans paraded through Slidell on Jan. 30 with 350 riders on 16 colorful floats as chilly weather did not stop large crowds from coming out. This festive event highlighted local tradition and community spirit.  The Times-Picayune
  • The Poseidon parade rolled off in Slidell on Jan. 31 amid cold weather as revelers huddled in vehicles until throws flew; it featured over 650 members and 26 floats celebrating the crowning of King and Queen who married at the Coronation Ball last July (marking a double celebration).  The Times-Picayune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Delta Utilities and Entergy report that customers will see higher utility bills in the coming months due to record high spot natural gas prices driven by extended cold weather conditions. Regulators plan to spread the cost increase over several months to help manage the impact on bills.  The Times-Picayune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pearl River student Aiden Franatovich and Walker student Kamryn Hudspeth will be crowned king and queen at the 91st Southeast District Livestock Show at the St. Tammany Parish Fairgrounds in Covington from Feb. 5-7; they will each get a $500 scholarship + belt buckle while touring barns.  The Times-Picayune

FINANCE NEWS

  • A $1 million Powerball ticket sold Monday at the ExtraMile gas station in Mandeville was a winner. The unnamed ticket holder must claim the prize at the Louisiana Lottery headquarters in Baton Rouge by Aug. 1 with ID + claim form.  The Times-Picayune

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Hospice House will host Camp Bearable for grieving children ages 7–12 at Fontainebleau State Park (in Mandeville) March 13–15, where kids engage in art, journaling and a letter-burning ceremony while parents join on Sunday morning before departure.  The Times-Picayune
