COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Irene Damby will volunteer at Abita Springs’ Not Your Mama’s Gumbo Cook-off on March 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help judges and collect votes while taking a break from managing her busy goat farm at Say Goat Cheese on the Abita and Covington border.  The Times-Picayune
  • Multiple local churches, including Our Lady of Lourdes in Slidell, offer Lenten fish fry dinners through March 27 — meals cost $10 to $23 and include fried fish, shrimp, or combo plates with sides served dine-in or via drive-thru.  The Times-Picayune

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Oscar-nominated film Sinners leads all-time Academy Award nominations and features a local tie — its lighting department includes Slidell talent, highlighting community artistry as the film garners global attention.  WWL-TV
  • Spectrum FX from Slidell earned an Oscar nomination for its special effects work on 'Sinners' and helped create nearly 3,000 local film jobs under the Louisiana film incentive. Lead coordinator Donnie Dean will attend the awards show on Mar. 15 (a proud milestone for the local film community).  WWL-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A water main break closed part of Magnolia Street today, causing delays and traffic detours. City crews are working quickly to repair the line and restore water service.  FOX 8
  • Covington native Bobby Piner reported he is stranded in Qatar after rockets forced him into shelter amid the ongoing Iran War. He reached out to local, state, and federal officials for help, but with nearby airports closed—official plans to bring Louisianians home remain unclear.  WDSU

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Slidell Tigers girls basketball team recorded a school-record 29 wins and advanced to state tournament semifinals with a 14-game win streak — a milestone achievement. They will face third-seeded Prairieville today at 8 p.m. at Southeastern's University Center.  The Times-Picayune
  • Former center Will Clapp retired less than a week ago and has joined the New Orleans Saints coaching staff as an offensive assistant under head coach Kellen Moore. The LSU standout (drafted in 2018) brings his NFL experience to his new role.  FOX 8
  • On March 3, Northshore secured a 70-55 playoff win over St. Amant while Covington and Pearl River lost their games to Zachary and Northwest. Northshore will face top seed Zachary Friday at 7 p.m. & coach Joshua Carlin credited the seniors for their road experience.  The Times-Picayune
