- ➤ Northshore businesses and local groups have organized fundraisers to support Sgt. Grant Candies’ wife and children—he died during a high-speed chase after being struck by a car while laying spike strips. WDSU
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A memorial service for Sgt. Grant Candies will be held on April 1 at Harbor Center in Slidell with visitation at 10 a.m. and the service at 1 p.m.—the sergeant was killed on Sunday during a high-speed chase that led to the arrest of three teens facing charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. - ➤ Louisiana State Representative Matt Willard has proposed a new bill to include financial literacy in school curriculums — he says this change will help students access college funding options. He noted that while students nationwide apply for FAFSA and TOPS, many low-income Louisiana students do not — the bill aims to improve their chances for higher education. WWL-TV

- ➤ Hurricane researchers are testing new tools after last season saw nearly double the average rate of rapid intensification events. They will use a tail Doppler radar, drones and StreamSondes (small weather stations) to gather key data (measuring wind and rainfall) that will help warn Louisiana residents with more time to prepare. - ➤ Starting April 5th, Mega Millions will switch to $5 tickets, raise its starting jackpot from $20 million to $50 million, improve winning odds from 1 in 302.5 million to 1 in 290.5 million, and add a built-in prize multiplier that can boost payouts up to 10 times—removing break-even prizes. Louisiana Lottery official Kimberly Chopin said that players who prefer a $2 game will still have the option to play Powerball drawn on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. WWL-TV
