CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Two 17-year-old suspects, Adrian Waughtal and Mason Fischer (facing charges for first-degree murder and kidnapping), were held after investigators said they kept two girls in the car during a chase when the girls wanted to get out in connection with Sgt. Clint Candies' death, while a third suspect, Michael Lanier, is charged only with murder. Louisiana Radio Network
- ➤ A Slidell man, 27-year-old Jamiel Miller, was convicted of second degree murder and obstruction of justice after a jury in St. Tammany Parish found him guilty for shooting Tavante Williamson in a parking lot — a shooting that occurred on June 25 at an apartment complex on Gause Boulevard — and his sentencing is set for April 22. - ➤ Two teens from Slidell now face new kidnapping charges along with earlier charges after a high-speed chase (which started early Sunday morning) ended in New Orleans and resulted in Sergeant Grant Candies being fatally struck while trying to deploy spike strips; one teen remains held without bond. - ➤ The Louisiana Department of Health said it would lose six federal grants (three for mental health and three for substance use programs) after receiving unclear emails from HHS, which could cost about $10 million. State officials said the department is reviewing the impact on staffing and services amid the broader federal funding cuts. The Times-Picayune
