COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Tammany Parish Animal Services has issued an emergency plea as its shelter now houses over 215 dogs—70% above capacity—after a surge in owner surrenders. The center has waived adoption fees for dogs there longer than six months and calls on the community to help foster or adopt pets to avoid euthanasia.  WWL-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • On March 26, detectives with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested New Orleans residents Derwin Alexander and Robert Garrett Jr at a gas station on Oak Harbor Boulevard in Slidell for selling drugs, and a search of their Chevrolet Silverado led to the seizure of crack cocaine, marijuana, Tapentadol pills, Fentanyl powder, drug paraphernalia, and a stolen handgun (the investigation spanned over two months and uncovered additional controlled substances) as the suspects now face charges linked to drug distribution and illegal firearm possession.  AN17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry announced during a news conference in Baton Rouge on Wednesday that he would work to hold insurance companies and lawyers accountable for rising car insurance rates following several destructive hurricanes. He said the legislation will adjust the scale for fairness—state lawmakers have filed 25 bills to promote a balanced insurance market.  WDSU
  • Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry said a technical change made Thursday night kept the Office of Motor Vehicles mainframe running smoothly with no issues for the past four days. He credited interim OMV Commissioner Bryan Landry for finding short-term fixes and exploring new technology to overhaul an aging system dating back to the 1970s that had not been purged since 2008.  WDSU
  • Louisiana will lose hundreds of millions in federal funds after FEMA cut the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities program—one that had received over 140 applications—impacting disaster mitigation support statewide.  WWL-TV
  • State Rep. Delisha Boyd introduced House Bill 279, the Caleb Wilson Act—designed to combat hazing in local colleges and universities—and lawmakers will debate the bill during the regular legislative session today.  WWL-TV

  • Northshore claimed the District 7*5A baseball title on April 8 when senior pitcher Carson Malasovich pitched a 1*0 complete game shutout against Slidell and struck out 11 in seven innings. The Panthers will finish district play today as they face Slidell again at Northshore.  The Times-Picayune
