COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Leslie Durio turned her personal loss into a community mission after uterine cancer made her choose volunteering over parenting. She has worked with over 20 nonprofits and will usher at the Abita Springs Opry on April 18 plus continues her part-time role at the Covington Trailhead Museum and Visitor Center.  The Times-Picayune
  • Love the Boot Week will run from April 18th through 26th and asks all 64 parishes to join in cleaning efforts across the state.  WWL-TV
  • The first Northshore Autism Acceptance Festival will run April 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mandeville Trailhead, offering six sensory zones (Balloon, Bubble, Foam, Jump, Sand, Sensory) plus a Quiet Zone. The free event, organized by the Northshore Neurodiversity Network, will also host nearly 80 vendors.  The Times-Picayune
  • The expanded St. Tammany Parish Law Enforcement Memorial will be rededicated on April 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the parish Justice Center in Covington to honor all fallen officers.  The Times-Picayune
  • Several crawfish fundraisers are planned across St. Tammany this April. In Slidell on April 18 at Fritchie Park, the 21st Louisiana Crawfish Cookoff will feature over 60 teams competing with 40,000 lbs of crawfish, unlimited tastings, and live music while benefiting Hospice House.  The Times-Picayune
  • At a local Chick-Fil-A, employee Jaydon Cintron found $10,000 during his break and returned it — an act that reinforces community trust in local honesty.  WWL-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Amazon will acquire Louisiana-based Globalstar (located in Covington) to expand its satellite service to mobile phones with messaging, voice, and data support. The deal is expected to close in 2027 pending regulatory approvals and deployment milestones.  WDSU

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new exhibit showcasing Carnival traditions and intricate garment details including beadwork and structure is now open at a local venue — it offers visitors a deeper look into this iconic tradition.  WWL-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A section of the Tammany Trace is closed for demolition and replacement of a deteriorated wooden bridge over the Abita River — the $1.6 million project began on March 30 and will see a new 300-foot steel trestle built off-site and installed by end of year.  The Times-Picayune
