COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Northshore Mustang Club partnered with the St. Tammany Fire Chiefs and Supreme Ford to host a Local First Responders car show at Fritchie Park in Slidell on May 3 that will benefit the firefighters’ Benevolent Association. The event will run from noon to 4 p.m. (judging begins at noon and an awards ceremony is set for 3 p.m.) and will include free vehicle registration from 8 to 11 a.m., door prizes, music, a raffle, auctions, and food sales.  The Times-Picayune

CRIME NEWS

  • An Arabi-area man was arrested on Monday, April 14th after a resident saw a masked suspect steal her 2018 Yukon near North Summerfield Loop, and patrol deputies disabled the vehicle near Oak Harbor—forcing 36-year-old Keith Hebert to jump off a bridge before he was retrieved from Lake Pontchartrain and taken to a hospital for evaluation ahead of charges at the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center.  AN17

CULTURE NEWS

  • St. Tammany Parish will host a busy slate of live music and cultural events in the coming weeks—featuring free concerts like Rockin' the Rails on April 17, Sunset at the Landing on April 18, and Bayou Jam in Slidell on April 27 as well as a community movie night today and art and theater programs at venues in Covington, Slidell and Mandeville. Residents are invited to bring chairs, blankets and refreshments to enjoy family-friendly shows that showcase local talent and cultural engagement.  The Times-Picayune
  • Trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis and his quintet will perform two sets at the Dew Drop stage in Old Mandeville on April 19 (6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.) as they cross the lake from New Orleans to bring their Grammy-winning sound to local fans.  The Times-Picayune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Professor Walter Dub Lane from UNO explained the gumbo index (a measure of Louisiana inflation) which shows that last March a pot of seafood gumbo cost $60 and this March it cost $67 as tariffs raised prices on imported seafood and vegetables. His analysis indicates that rising costs for key ingredients are a sign that local dining expenses are climbing.  WWL-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Tammany Parish Public Schools are asking voters to support a $325M bond issue on May 3 that will fund major renovations at 23 schools, improve safety systems, invest in new buses and create a STEM Discovery Center in Lacombe. The measure will keep the current 13.7 mill property tax rate—fast-tracking upgrades for over 36,000 students and 6,000 employees.  The Times-Picayune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Governor Landry kicked off the 2025 legislative session by presenting his plan to lower auto insurance rates with proposals that restrict attorney advertising, require proof that injuries came from car accidents, and raise the no-pay-no-play threshold from $15,000 to $100,000 — he also backed measures to remove toxins from school lunches and to reorganize the Department of Transportation — making auto insurance reform the top issue for lawmakers.  WWL-TV
