BUSINESS NEWS

  • Andrew Labit celebrated one year of owning Book Sack, a used bookstore he bought in April last year from longtime owner Mary Lou Hilts; he said the shop saved a cherished Slidell landmark. The store (open Tuesday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.) has been cash flow positive, and Labit plans to keep it running while taking classes at Southeastern Louisiana University (studying accounting).  The Times-Picayune

CULTURE NEWS

  • On April 26, volunteers at Bayou Lacombe Museum will honor Earth Day by showcasing Chahta culture at Bayou Lacombe Park. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.—featuring garden tours, scavenger hunts, games and a concert by The Sunsetters under a big oak.  The Times-Picayune

  • At St. Mary's, eleventh graders Tatum Williams, Cre'shaun Jones and Kacie Person secured the top three spots in the Upper Classmen Math Fair competition.  WWL-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Southern Regional Climate Center shut down Thursday after its federal funding expired, leaving public and private users without near real-time climate data for the South — Louisiana forecasters worry the loss may hamper weather monitoring and emergency response until alternative funding is approved — officials said.  The Times-Picayune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana lawmakers plan to dissolve the Independent Party and reassign roughly 149464 voters to no party status so they can vote in closed primary races in 2026—aiming to reduce confusion under the new rules for upcoming elections.  The Times-Picayune
  • Early voting for the May 3 elections runs from today until Saturday, April 26 excluding Sunday, April 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.—the deadline to request an absentee ballot is Tuesday, April 29 at 4:30 p.m. All absentee ballots must be received by May 2—polls on election day will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.  WWL-TV

  • St. Paul's Wolves swept the first-round playoff series against Byrd at Heap Field on April 17 with wins of 8-4 & 15-2. Newly promoted head coach Mike Scanlon said star players Easton LeBlanc & Brennan Keim helped the team as it prepares to face Holy Cross next week.  The Times-Picayune
