CULTURE NEWS

  • On April 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Songs of Survivors will host a free songwriting workshop for local veterans at American Legion Post 16 in Covington, offering 15 slots (additional sessions may be scheduled if enough veterans sign up) so participants can work with professional songwriters to create a song about their military experiences.  The Times-Picayune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fifteen years ago on April 20, an explosion at the Deepwater Horizon oil platform off our coast released 4.9-million barrels of toxic oil, causing 11 deaths and a cleanup that lasted 87 days—marking it as the largest marine oil spill in history.  Louisiana Radio Network
  • Lease agreements with landowners have been signed across rural Louisiana for at least five utility-scale wind projects that may lead to the state’s first land-based wind farms—two in St. Landry and three in northeastern parishes. Local officials and companies like AES and Cordelio Power say these projects could bring new revenue and jobs, although no turbines have been built yet.  The Times-Picayune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Slidell Memorial Hospital is asking voters on May 3 to support a $51.5M bond that will fund a new pediatric and primary care outpatient center—upgrades for its women and infants center, cancer clinic and emergency room, and extra parking. If approved, the tax rate will drop from 6.75 mills to 5.99 mills and its expiration will extend from 2041 to 2045.  The Times-Picayune
  • Louisiana lawmakers Rep. Troy Carter from New Orleans and Rep. Clay Higgins from Lafayette introduced a bill Wednesday to give the FDA power to seize and destroy imported seafood that fails safety tests — the measure aims to protect consumers and local seafood processors. The bill now awaits review by a House committee before it can move forward.  The Times-Picayune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Two Northshore athletes announced their college plans on April 10. Swimmer Adonis Turner III will study political science & law at Loyola University New Orleans after swimming the 100-yard backstroke & butterfly at the state meet, while softball player Abryannah Chachere signed with Division III Hendrix College in Conway, Ark to study nursing.  The Times-Picayune
  • Slidell baseball swept Zachary in a two-game series on April 18—19 with wins of 3 to 1 and 8 to 5, and first-year coach Cameron Lewis praised the team's strong pitching and hitting. The Tigers will travel later this week to face Northwood-Shreveport in the second round.  The Times-Picayune
