COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Slidell will host Lemonpalooza on May 3 with events in Olde Towne as children compete in a lemonade contest at City Hall from 9 a.m. to noon and adults join a tasting crawl from 3 to 6 p.m. Proceeds support a façade grant program.  The Times-Picayune
  • Love The Boot Week occurred from Saturday through Sunday across 64 parishes as over 28,000 volunteers took part in 1,200 cleanups (efforts that Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser said helped lower littering), marking the fifth year of the statewide initiative.  Louisiana Radio Network
  • The Friends of the Slidell Library celebrate 50 years with a Golden Jubilee book sale on May 1-2 (with refreshments and commemorative bookmarks) that raises funds for local library projects and future plans such as a new Reading Garden in Slidell.  The Times-Picayune

CULTURE NEWS

  • Student artists showcased their work at the Slidell Cultural Center's George Dunbar Gallery during the Salad Days Juried Exhibition that opened March 27, with awards presented in age categories. The exhibit remains open by appointment through May 1.  The Times-Picayune
  • St. Tammany’s 'Art Imitates Life' exhibit shows 14 life-size statues loaned from Seward Johnson Atelier in Covington, Madisonville, Mandeville, Slidell, and Abita Springs over the next year — including one at Olde Town Slidell on Carey Street. The Covington Public Art Fund and Visit the Northshore led the project.  The Times-Picayune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Northshore officials met at a University of New Orleans event in Covington on Tuesday to discuss economic growth. They highlighted a planned $15 billion investment that could create 1,500 jobs + thousands more indirectly while noting ongoing challenges with local infrastructure.  The Times-Picayune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Girls Health Day at LCMC’s Lakeview Hospital recently gave girls ages 8-14 and their guardians a chance to learn about health, social issues, safety and STEM through vendor booths featuring interactive demos like a simulated intoxication walk and robotic surgical techniques arranged by the Junior League of Greater Covington.  The Times-Picayune

  • Three Salmen High School basketball players announced their college choices on April 20. Marley McKnight will play at Delgado CC, Akayla McMooain will join Xavier University, and Bryelle Major will attend Southwest Mississippi CC.  The Times-Picayune
