Good morning, Slidell. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 23rd of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The parish will hold events on April 26 to mark the Tammany Trace’s 30th birthday and Celebrate Trails Day with bike rides, gardening lessons, pet adoptions from the animal services, and limited edition commemorative items available at well-known trailheads—Abita Springs, Koop Drive, Bayou Lacombe, Bonfouca-Carollo and Camp Salmen. The 31-mile trail draws 300,000 users a year and has grown from a converted rail corridor into a local gem—boosting tourism and outdoor recreation.  The Times-Picayune
  • The new skate park opened at John Slidell Park as residents enjoyed a day of skating after a ribbon cutting—despite tax day. Former Mayor Greg Cromer, who led the park’s development for years, said the park is second only to the skate venue at Venice Beach—showing its appeal for local skaters.  The Times-Picayune
  • Eligible homeowners in East St. Tammany can apply for a grant worth up to $15,000 to replace their roof with a fortified system that meets wind-resistance standards — applicants must own a single-family home with a permanent foundation and meet income and current insurance requirements.  The Times-Picayune
  • Slidell’s annual unlimited crawfish cookout will take place Saturday, April 26 at Fritchie Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.—featuring tons of crawfish served to support Hospice House. Advance tickets cost $40 and admission is $45 at the gate, with children under 12 admitted free.  The Times-Picayune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city will remove the landscaped medians in Sterling Oaks, saying they are too narrow for emergency vehicles and school buses because permits were not submitted—despite residents investing over $9,000 in maintenance. Mayor Bill Borchert confirmed the plan will move forward after delays from a snowstorm, even though long-time neighbor Dr. Yevonne Baran and others backed the project.  WDSU
  • The St. Tammany Fire Protection District No. 1 in Slidell got reaccreditation from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International for the third time after meeting tough standards (covering 11 areas such as governance and safety) with its self-assessment program. This achievement (placing it among only three accredited fire departments in Louisiana) shows the department's strong commitment to quality local service.  The Times-Picayune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Hannan sophomore pitcher Ava Kulivan struck out 10 batters in the playoff win over Leesville on April 22 at Coquille Park—she helped secure a 15 to 0 victory and the team will host St. Charles in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 4 p.m.  The Times-Picayune
