ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • WWL Louisiana aired the second episode of its WWL Investigates series with David Hammer on Sunday, April 20 at 7 p.m.—the report examined lasting environmental damage and billions in economic losses from the BP oil spill. The series will continue to explore the disaster’s ongoing impact along Louisiana’s coast.  WWL-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers are split on whether kratom is a safe alternative to pain killers in Louisiana — they plan to continue debating its risks and benefits.  WWL-TV
  • Parish officials in Lacombe are building a 25-acre nature park that will cost $2 million and include kayak launches, boardwalks and themed zones—Swamp Experience, Woodland Trail Loop, Industrial Discovery Zone and Marsh District with walking paths. The park is located between Bayou Lacombe Boat Launch, Bayou Lacombe Bridge Trailhead and Tammany Trace, and construction is expected to finish within the next year.  WGNO

SPORTS NEWS

  • Pope John Paul II distance runner Adam Merkle signed with Loyola University-New Orleans on April 23rd after setting school records in the 3-mile run (15 min, 39 sec) and the 3200-meter run (10:02). He finished third at the state meet last season and his parents Erik and Lisa Merkle were there to support him.  The Times-Picayune
  • After Jay Carlin retired, assistant coach Zachary Pisciotta was named head coach at Pope John Paul II on April 10. Pisciotta, a 2017 graduate with five years of experience with the Jaguars, said he will work to keep the team's playoff success going—he credited his mentors for his growth as a coach.  The Times-Picayune
