ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The family of two-year-old Preston Ordone disputes the Louisiana State Police report after he died last Friday in a crash on I-12 near Covington—eyewitnesses say the details in the report did not match what they saw and his grandfather called the post insensitive as the investigation remains active.  WDSU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Tammany Parish Library will launch its Summer Reading Challenge called "Color Our World" from May 22 to July 31 to boost reading and literacy for all ages—kickoff parties with art activities and prizes will take place at the Slidell and Madisonville branches. Participants can register online and track their progress using Beanstack as they read for 15 minutes daily or complete bingo challenges.  The Times-Picayune
  • St. Tammany Parish voters will decide on Saturday on a $325M bond plan to fix 23 schools, add more safety, update computer systems and buy new buses, and build a STEM center in Lacombe – the largest school project in the district that keeps the 13.7 mill property tax unchanged.  The Times-Picayune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The House Transportation Committee voted 6+5 against a bill to end the vehicle inspection sticker program that charges $10 for a one-year and $20 for a two-year test. Representative Bagley argued the rule was government overreach while inspection station owners and critics warned that dropping the program could affect road safety.  Louisiana Radio Network
  • Louisiana lawmakers are advancing a bill that would ban holding a phone to your ear while driving—supporters say it could lower car insurance rates. The governor is set to back the measure as the House Transportation Committee endorsed it.  WWL-TV
