Good morning, Slidell. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 1st of May.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday, Slidell made history when Louisiana’s first Safe Haven Baby Box was unveiled outside St. Tammany Fire Station 11 — a device largely funded by Travis Born’s donation and costing nearly $30,000 that offers a safe, anonymous option for mothers in crisis. Local leaders said the launch marks the start of ongoing awareness campaigns and future installations in other parishes. WDSU
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A California-based firm working on the Archdiocese bankruptcy case said it was hit by a ransomware attack in late February that breached an employee laptop on March 2—hackers claimed they deleted the stolen data. The firm is now working with data experts to check if any personal information on clergy abuse survivors was taken as settlement talks continue. The Times-Picayune
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The fall of Saigon happened on April 29, 1975 — a turning point that brought many Vietnamese refugees to Louisiana where they found work in fishing and shrimping. In the 50 years since, these newcomers have built strong families that continue to shape our local community. WWL-TV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Four Mandeville Girl Scouts—Addison Altland, Susannah Donoghue, Riley Kinler, and Emily Simmons—earned the Gold Award by completing over 80 hours on community projects that made music events accessible, created spaces for writers and waiting areas at a counseling center, and raised scoliosis awareness. Their achievement, earned by only 5.4% of eligible Girl Scouts, is recognized by colleges and employers as a sign of strong leadership and discipline. The Times-Picayune
