Future Use of Energy in Louisiana has awarded nearly $900,000 in grants to 13 programs to expand energy workforce training, with funds set to update curriculum and boost career opportunities at institutions including Louisiana Tech and East Baton Rouge Parish School System. - ➤ St. Tammany voters approved a $325 million bond for school improvements at 23 local schools — the measure passed with 56% support, and a separate $51.5 million bond to expand services at Slidell Memorial Hospital passed with 52% of the vote as nearly all precincts were counted. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Louisiana health officials reported 164 whooping cough cases in the first four months of this year, surpassing last year’s 153 cases, with 40 patients hospitalized—70% of whom were infants. - ➤ Live Oak won 3-2 on May 3 when catcher Connor Smith hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to send his team to the LHSAA baseball state semifinals — the Panthers earned their first quarterfinal win since 2019. The Times-Picayune
- ➤ Slidell baseball, making its first Division I quarterfinal appearance since 2007, lost to Sam Houston on May 3 when timely hits helped the Broncos secure a 4-2 win. The Tigers rallied in the seventh inning after trailing 4-0 but could not overcome the key plays—coach Cameron Lewis said the team pushed until the final out. The Times-Picayune
- ➤ Senior Sam Loeb, playing with a torn meniscus, hit a game-winning RBI in a 3-2 walk-off win at Loyola Prep on May 3 that sent Hannan to the state semifinals for the first time in over 20 years—his crucial hit ended a long playoff drought.
