- ➤ Community leaders and volunteers will meet on June 19 at the First Baptist Church of Covington from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. for the State of Our Children breakfast, where money will be raised and plans to help children in foster care move to better lives will be discussed—tickets cost $30 and sponsorships are available to benefit the Royal Family Kids Camp and Mentoring Club. - ➤ May in St. Tammany Parish is packed with community events including free concerts, theater shows and family activities planned at venues in Slidell, Covington, Mandeville and Abita Springs—organizers have set detailed schedules, registration deadlines and venue rules for each event. - ➤ Ayushi Purohit, a senior at St. Scholastica, was honored on April 28 with the Champions of Service Award by Volunteer Louisiana and Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser for her work with Hope House and her leadership in forming new HOSA chapters. She runs a small business to fund support for abused children and was named a Morehead-Cain Scholar, which will send her to UNC Chapel Hill and a leadership program in July – proving her deep commitment to our community. - ➤ Visit the Northshore staff returned to their newly renovated headquarters on La. 59 near I-12 after a nearly $400,000 overhaul fixed flood and mold damage—updating visitor services, staff offices, and a conference space. Revenue increased by 11% in February and March compared to last year, and the center now offers updated visitor information and a new welcome program. The Times-Picayune
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Renowned chefs from across the state will compete at the Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off on June 27th at Harbor Center near Slidell, where they will plate five seafood entrees for judges and the winner will advance to the Great American Seafood Cook-Off. The event will also launch Tammany Taste of Summer from Aug. 1-31, featuring special tasting menus from 15 local restaurants for hundreds of spectators. The Times-Picayune
- ➤ Maritime Music and Arts Festival will be held on May 10 in Madisonville Pine Street Park and will feature six bands playing many music styles; Rhythm Brothers will start at 1 p.m. and Supercharger will perform at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $20+kids 12 and under enter free and proceeds will fund the restoration of the Tchefuncte River Lighthouse into a future tourist attraction. - ➤ Abita Springs Opry will end its spring season on May 17th with a 7 p.m. show inside Town Hall and pre-show tunes on the front porch with local nonprofits selling food if the weather holds—featuring bluegrass from The Spring Chickens, a jazz/folk debut by Parker Freeman, and a Louisiana medley by KASS led by Cassie Krebs. The Opry will return for its next season in the fall. The Times-Picayune
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Local officials in Slidell and St. Tammany are preparing for incoming storms by clearing ditches and urging residents to remove debris from drains. Crews are testing the upgraded W14 Canal—with a new pump system and about $15 million in improvements—as the next 48 hours will gauge the city’s flood preparedness. WDSU
