- ➤ WWL-TV is launching a new spinoff—Behind the Band—that shows local high school band programs across southeast Louisiana. The series will premiere tomorrow and run for several weeks, offering behind-the-scenes stories and interviews with student musicians and band directors. WWL-TV
- ➤ Newly elected Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, has family roots in New Orleans' 7th Ward—genealogist Jari Honora traced his mother's side using old marriage licenses and records; U.S. Rep. Troy Carter said he is proud of the pope's link to local Creole and Haitian heritage. The Times-Picayune
- ➤ Robert Prevost, who chose the name Pope Leo XIV, was elected as the first American pope after a two-day conclave on May 8th. Louisiana leaders congratulated him—Governor Jeff Landry and Senator Bill Cassidy offered prayers and support for his leadership. WDSU
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Jeff Landry and state lawmakers lowered individual and corporate tax rates while raising the sales tax to help rein in Louisiana’s $7.5 billion in tax breaks – the state gave away $1 for every $2 collected in 2023. Some legislators are now proposing new tax incentives, even as experts warn that such breaks have high costs for taxpayers. The Times-Picayune
- ➤ Today, the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles stated that driver’s licenses must show the gold star to meet REAL ID standards for boarding commercial flights, though travelers can use a passport+TWIC card+military ID instead; non-compliant licenses still work for driving and buying alcohol but may lead to extra checks at TSA.
