CRIME NEWS

  • A second person has been convicted in connection with the overdose death of a Bush teenager from July 12, 2022 — 23-year-old Covington drug dealer Alvin Laurant Jr. was found guilty of second-degree murder and will be sentenced on June 18.  WGNO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fontainebleau High School hosted a farewell ceremony for its Class of 2025—marking the end of their studies and celebrating the students' achievements.  The Times-Picayune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana lawmakers passed a package that cuts the oil severance tax for new wells nearly in half and shortens the natural gas tax exemption to 18 months—aiming to boost production and immediate revenue while an economist warned the changes could lead to less revenue over time. The measures cleared the House and now face review in the Senate.  The Times-Picayune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Derek Carr retired Saturday because of a shoulder injury—ending his NFL career and freeing up $30 million—which prompts a quarterback battle between Spencer Rattler and rookie Tyler Shough. Tyler Shough said he is fired up to compete—he looks forward to training under coach Kellen Moore—while the team has yet to announce the starter for 2025.  WDSU
  • Pearl River softball coach Courtney Labourdette stepped down after 15 seasons to focus on her family and will remain as head volleyball coach—she said she needs more time to support her daughter’s tournaments and her son's games. Pearl River principal Trece Jordan-Larsen said the school has begun searching for a new softball coach—prospective candidates are under review.  The Times-Picayune
