COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sue Helen Ford, a Slidell Girl Scout, earned her Gold Award after launching Olde Towne Slidell History Stroll using QR codes at 11 downtown sites to share local history. The project debuted during the White Linen and Lagniappe celebration in August 2025 and connects past and present.  The Times-Picayune
  • Slidell will host the Avery Natal 5K race and one mile fun run on May 23 from 8 a.m. to noon on Johnny F. Smith Boulevard; the event honors the late student by funding scholarships, costs $35, and features a commemorative balloon release (set to her favorite song).  The Times-Picayune
  • The city will revitalize Morris F.X. Jeff stadium with a new field scheduled for completion in August. City officials say the upgrade will improve the venue for community events.  WWL-TV
  • Roses in Bloom, a new nonprofit, will host its first crawfish boil fundraiser in Covington to support neurodivergent adults and adults with disabilities. The family-friendly event is set for Saturday, May 30 at Lit Rooster, 70327 La. 1077, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.  WDSU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Teen piano prodigy River Eckert will close the Third Sunday Concert Series on May 17 at Christ Episcopal Church in Covington with a free one-hour show featuring New Orleans classics and tributes — a nod to local musical legends.  The Times-Picayune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pope John Paul II held its spring commencement on May 5 in its Slidell gymnasium, graduating the Class of 2026 and marking the first spring ceremony at a high school in St. Tammany.  The Times-Picayune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Osprey Initiative will begin removing 18 derelict vessels from Lake Maurepas in mid-May using grant funds from the Air Products Lake Maurepas Community Fund. The three-week project aims to improve waterway safety and enhance drainage for local boaters.  AN17

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Folsom Veterinary Clinic has provided St. Tammany Fire District No. 5 with three new Animal Rescue Packs containing pet oxygen masks and triage supplies for various sizes. Capt. Adam Shields said the equipment will help reduce risks when pets are caught in house fires.  The Times-Picayune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Northshore’s Grace Keene broke composite state records in the 800 and 1,600 at Bernie Moore Stadium on Saturday, May 9. She wrapped up her Louisiana high school career with a third-place finish in the 3,200 as her family gets ready to move to Oregon, leaving a lasting mark in Slidell.  The Times-Picayune
