CULTURE NEWS

  • Bayou Boogaloo is set for this weekend with a new venue — the event offers a refreshed twist on its classic lineup as organizers update activities and food options for locals.  WWL-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Tangipahoa Parish School System’s Advanced College and Career Magnet Center took part in a mock disaster drill today on West 2nd Street, practicing life saving skills including neck braces and CPR. Instructors and local emergency responders led the drill — and plan further exercises.  AN17
  • Louisiana students have made gains in both reading and math since 2022, leading the nation in reading progress and ranking second in math growth, according to a report (Education Scorecard). A focus on phonics-based instruction and enhanced summer learning programs has contributed to the gains, though some districts still lag.  The Times-Picayune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Pest control experts report termite swarms affecting southeast Louisiana neighborhoods and advise homeowners to remove standing water and inspect properties for damage as the season is expected to last until late June.  FOX 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • For over a month, residents on the east side of Chef Menteur Pass Bridge have faced delays in vital services as safety repairs continue; state officials expect the bridge to reopen in about two weeks, which will help first responders travel a more direct route from Slidell.  FOX 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • Louisiana's annual water system grades for 2025 show improvements in New Orleans and strong scores in parts of St. Tammany including near Slidell, while failing marks were given in Plaquemines Parish and Bogalusa. Officials say the low grades highlight long-term infrastructure issues but do not signal an immediate health risk.  The Times-Picayune
  • Healing with Horses Louisiana in Folsom offers equine therapy sessions to help people with mental and emotional challenges. The program takes its rehabbed thoroughbreds to nursing homes and hospitals, and founder Kelly Cox Vicari started it 13 years ago after caring for her mother with Alzheimer’s.  WDSU
  • Local doctors warn of a rise in Little League elbow injuries among young pitchers and advise parents and coaches to enforce proper warm-up techniques to protect young arms (local sports clinics emphasize early treatment).  FOX 8
