- ➤ Second Harvest Food Bank said a vital USDA program cut has cost it 1.2 million meals since January and that it will lose another 1.2 million meals by August—reducing food support for nearly 430,000 local people, including many children who rely on school meals. Local officials are urging the administration to revive the programs while the food bank asks for community donations. FOX 8
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ U.S. Majority Leader Steve Scalise addressed Louisiana lawmakers on May 14 to update them on funds for economic development and coastal restoration. He said lifting the cap on offshore drilling revenue sharing is expected to bring in hundreds of millions to restore the coast — a measure following major investments such as a $10 billion Meta data center and a $5.8 billion Hyundai steel plant. - ➤ Louisiana lawmakers passed House Bill 495 to lower the severance tax on oil and boost energy production— the bill now awaits Senate action. Experts expect the change will increase production only modestly. WWL-TV
- ➤ The Senate committee approved two tort reform bills that will lower auto insurance premiums by reducing injury payouts; one bill cuts compensation for uninsured drivers while the other caps payments when a driver is 51% or more at fault. Senator Gary Carter opposed the measures—saying they remove rights without a guarantee of lower rates—while Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple supported the changes to address Louisiana’s high bodily injury claim numbers.
