  • Frontier Airlines will add dozens of nonstop flights out of MSY starting in July after Spirit Airlines shut down on May 2, offering daily service to Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta, and Orlando + flights to Philadelphia and Las Vegas beginning in September.  WWL-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • St. Tammany Farmer staffers and freelancers won 17 awards at the LPA Better Newspaper Contest held May 8 in Baton Rouge. The newspaper, recognized for six consecutive Division 3 honors, earned accolades for layout, design, photography + writing.  The Times-Picayune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Drivers in Slidell face high gas prices ahead of Memorial Day weekend; fuel costs remain steep and locals may need to budget carefully for travel & holiday plans.  WWL-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The recreational red snapper season began May 1 + opening weekend through May 3 produced about 8,307 pounds caught, which is 0.9% of this year's 882,439-pound quota in Louisiana. Strict quotas aim to help rebuild the species' population.  The Times-Picayune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Jeff Landry posted on social media Monday, May 18 to express frustration after all ballot amendments failed, including one to give teachers a permanent raise; he warned that if teachers do not get their raise, no state government employee will receive one.  WDSU

  • The Pelicans hired former Orlando Magic coach Jamahl Mosley as head coach on a five-year deal. Officials said Mosley had been in talks since early May & confirmed his hiring after a meeting at the NBA draft combine in Chicago.  FOX 8
