Good morning, Slidell. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 20th of May.

  • Sgt. Grant Candies, 37, died in March when he was struck while deploying spike strips on Interstate 10 near the Oak Harbor exit, and a roadside memorial in St. Tammany Parish now honors his sacrifice—three teens including driver Adrian Waughtal, 17, and Slidell passengers Michael Emanuel Lanier and Mason Paul Eugene Fischer, both 17, have been arrested and face charges of murder and kidnapping in connection with the high-speed chase.  WDSU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the state senate will consider a bill that gives the insurance commissioner power to veto insurer rate increases—this change follows a law signed just over a year ago that made it easier for companies to raise rates, yet commissioner Tim Temple said the added authority is unnecessary and could drive insurers away from Louisiana.  WWL-TV
  • The Slidell area fire department introduced Chief Mooney, a 2 1/2-year-old golden retriever donated by Thin Line Service Dogs, to help first responders lower stress by nudging them for comfort—he will serve behind the scenes rather than at public events.  The Times-Picayune
