COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Three northshore Memorial Day events will honor military heroes, with Mandeville hosting its 12th Annual Heroes at Home Family Reunion starting at 10 a.m.—featuring live music and family contests—while Covington plans a Veterans Appreciation Reception with complimentary lunch and Slidell will hold a veteran breakfast on May 24.  The Times-Picayune
  • The Northshore Food Bank reported emptier shelves and a 28% drop in donations as summer nears, and community leaders urged extra support to help local families. Food donations will be accepted at the Covington warehouse—125 W. 30th Ave.—on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon.  The Times-Picayune
  • Late spring events in St. Tammany neighborhoods offer a busy schedule of music, art, and community gatherings from May 22 to June 1—Slidell will host the Ozone Summer Sound-off at the Little Theater on May 30 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. with Greg Barnhill while nearby communities feature zydeco in Mandeville on May 23, a Beatles tribute in Covington on May 29, a comedy show in Slidell on May 23–24, and a Widows’ Social Club meeting in Slidell on May 31 at 10 a.m.  The Times-Picayune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • St. Tammany Parish will host its largest Household Hazardous Waste Day event on May 31 (8 a.m. to noon) at the parish fairgrounds in Covington where residents can drop off hazardous items. Attendees must register online to select a time slot and bring their items via the E. Magee Street entrance for proper disposal.  The Times-Picayune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • St. Tammany Fire Protection District No.1 has welcomed a new K9 peer support dog—Chief Mooney, a 2½-year-old golden retriever trained to detect stress and PTSD among firefighters—to help improve the mental health of its team. He was named to honor Deputy Sheriff Jason Mooney, who died in 2007, and will work with his handler at the training academy each day.  The Times-Picayune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Alyssa Leake, a 2015 Pearl River alumna who played softball at Louisiana Christian University, was named the new head coach at Pearl River High School on May 19. She said her return to lead the team—while she keeps her job as a P.E. teacher at Whispering Forest Elementary—will give players better access to college opportunities.  The Times-Picayune
