COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Memorial Day events take place across the metro area (including ceremonies in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, and St. Tammany parishes) to honor fallen service members. In Slidell, the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs will host a service at 34888 Grantham College Drive on Monday, May 25 at 11 a.m.  WWL-TV
  • Capt. Timothy Fox from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries urges boaters to review safety practices ahead of Memorial Day weekend + local boaters should check their equipment and monitor weather before heading out.  WWL-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Senate finance committee approved a budget on Thursday that cuts the $2,000 stipends for teachers and $1,000 for support staff, meaning educators in our area will face lower pay next school year. The bill now heads to the full Senate and House for review & possible amendments.  The Times-Picayune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service forecasts a below-average hurricane season with eight to 14 named storms and urges residents to prepare with the season starting a week from Monday (experts note past storms like Betsy and Andrew still caused serious damage).  Louisiana Radio Network

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Chef Pass Bridge on Highway 90 reopens today after major repairs replaced beams and trusses, ending a 20-mile detour and easing travel between the south and north shores — DOTD officials plan to re-inspect the 97-year-old structure soon for safety.  FOX 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU fans are excited as Ed Orgeron returns to join Lane Kiffin's staff as a special assistant for recruiting and defense at LSU, and many believe his experience will boost team defense for the upcoming 2026 season (especially among longtime supporters).  FOX 8
  • Four St. Tammany football teams held scrimmages from May 13 to May 15 to prepare for the 2026 season in local venues, with coaches praising offensive plays + noting areas for improvement as they plan to build team depth during summer training.  The Times-Picayune
