  • Slidell’s annual Heritage Festival will celebrate Independence Day on June 27 at 6 p.m. with live music, food, children’s activities & fireworks; tickets cost $15 with free entry for kids under 12, and proceeds support local charities.  The Times-Picayune

BUSINESS NEWS

  • WOW Turkey is a new restaurant offering an upscale spin on turkey dishes and streamed a behind-the-scenes look this morning in town (revealing its modern culinary approach).  WWL-TV
  • The new restaurant WOW Turkey opened its doors at 401 Andrew Higgins Blvd & now serves jumbo smoked turkey legs stuffed with classic New Orleans flavors. Locals can enjoy a taste of the city's newest culinary spot.  WWL-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Salmen High School held its graduation ceremony for the class of 2026 on May 20 after recovering from campus damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The school serves about 1,200 students from south Slidell and Eden Isles.  The Times-Picayune
  • Local official Landry vowed to secure a permanent teacher pay raise, with most funds expected from the state's Minimum Foundation Program (the funding formula for K-12 education). The move, announced amid a tight state budget, aims to strengthen support for local educators.  WWL-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Jeff Landry signed House Bill 286 today, a law that will require grades K through 12 students to participate in early workforce exposure—such as career surveys and guest speakers—to help build local career pathways.  FOX 8

HEALTH NEWS

  • Timeless Touch Medical Aesthetics will host its fourth annual blood drive at 317 N Columbia St in Covington on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.—donors earn a $250 gift card and help meet a 200-donor goal to support local blood banks.  WDSU
  • Lawmakers passed a bill that removes cost sharing for prostate cancer screenings for high-risk men, and it is now awaiting Governor Jeff Landry’s signature. The measure could lower barriers to early detection at local clinics & hospitals.  Louisiana Radio Network
