Good morning, Slidell. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 4th of June.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers with Wild Ones’ Pontchartrain Basin chapter rescued 23 native plant species — including white-topped sedge and daisy fleabane — from a highway development site in St. Tammany to preserve local biodiversity. They will hold similar plant rescue and education events to protect Louisiana’s unique natural habitats.  The Times-Picayune
  • Slidell will host a glass collection for recycling on June 14 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Public Operations yard on Bayou Lane — located between West Hall and West Pennsylvania. The city will then hold collections on the second Saturday of each month — in April, more than 65 vehicles participated and in May over 4,000 pounds of glass was collected.  The Times-Picayune
  • Recent bear sightings in Covington and Baton Rouge rise as mating season drives young male black bears into neighborhoods. Wildlife officials advise residents to secure garbage and food and to carry bear spray—following these steps can help keep encounters safe.  The Times-Picayune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, the St. Tammany Parish Council will hear residents’ complaints about Magnolia Water after many reported brown, smelly water and rising bills. Local homeowners say the private utility—now managed by Central States Water Resources—has not provided clear details on boil advisories or needed repairs.  The Times-Picayune
