CRIME NEWS

  • Three Slidell teens were indicted by a St. Tammany Parish grand jury on June 3 for the March 23 death of Sergeant Candies, who was killed while deploying a spike strip during a high-speed chase — their arraignment is set for July 14.  AN17

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Economic officials are watching a Senate review of a House bill that may cut clean energy tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act, potentially putting nearly $40 billion in planned solar, hydrogen and electric vehicle projects at risk. Local groups are urging senators to protect the credits—arguing that doing so is key to preserving jobs and future investments.  The Times-Picayune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Student Alli Dominique from Slidell, a Salmen High School graduate, has been awarded the first 2025 Waddell Family Southeastern Channel Sports Media Scholarship by Southeastern Louisiana University—she will receive a $1,000 cash prize and an internship on the Southeastern Channel sports staff for the 2025/2026 academic year—and looks forward to launching her career in sports journalism.  AN17
  • Northshore Technical Community College held its first-ever Associate of Science in Nursing pinning ceremony on May 14 at the Fleur de Lis Event Center in Mandeville to honor 18 graduates who completed the new ASN-RN program designed to ease Louisiana’s nursing shortage. The college is expanding its health sciences offerings with a new Patient Navigator program and a Surgical Technology course+ a nearly $500,000 grant supports these initiatives.  AN17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana lawmakers passed a law that will ban artificial dyes and preservatives in school meals starting in 2027 and require QR code labels on food with certain chemicals. The law also says schools must use 20% local food, businesses must add seed oil warnings, and medical professionals must attend nutrition training every two years — matching the Make America Healthy Again goals.  WWL-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Louisiana Department of Health reminds residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites that can spread West Nile virus and other illnesses. Officials advise applying EPA-approved repellent—such as DEET or lemon-eucalyptus oil—and removing standing water from yards to reduce mosquito breeding.  AN17
  • Woman’s Hospital celebrated its new mobile coach that uses advanced 3D mammography technology—funded by the Foundation for Woman’s—to give women easier access to screenings statewide. The coach will travel Monday-Friday to schools, churches and community centers for appointments and walk-ins.  AN17
