Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 12th of June.
Good morning, Slidell.
🎓 Education
Gov. Jeff Landry has proposed a plan that will take 5% of state school funds to pay teachers $2,000 and support staff $1,000 instead of raises, a change that would reduce funding to schools (based on employee counts).
The plan awaits Louisiana Legislature approval.
🌲 Environment
LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim says new El Niño conditions in the tropical Pacific may lead to a quieter hurricane season and a cooler, rainier spring in Louisiana.
NOAA estimates a 63% chance of a Super El Niño (similar to past events) that could reduce tropical storm activity.
🏛️ Government
Louisiana lawmakers approved bills to regulate prescription drug pricing by requiring insurers to cover cheaper generic drugs, increasing local pharmacy fees, and limiting PBM practices.
The bills still need Gov. Landry’s signature and could help control costs & improve patient access.
🏈 Sports
PJP II shortstop Blaze Rodriguez, a Pope John Paul II grad, had a breakout season for the Ragin' Cajuns by starting in 66 games and earning All-Tournament honors (Starkville Regional).
The 19-year-old will aim to gain 10 pounds before next season and continue his strong performance at UL.
