CRIME NEWS

  • Slidell police arrested 36-year-old Bryant Irvin of New Orleans around noon Thursday on Ninth Street after he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend multiple times and surrendered his knife following a brief chase+ he now faces one count of attempted second-degree murder while she remains in critical condition.  WWL-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city of Slidell approved the purchase of 5.3 acres from Weyerhaeuser for moving electric transmission lines at the municipal airport, a step that will allow an eventual runway extension. The City Council also approved an extra $5,000 for the Heritage Festival fireworks set for June 28 to support local nonprofits.  The Times-Picayune
  • Segment 2 of Louisiana 3241 opened this week in east-central St. Tammany Parish—an 8-mile stretch running from La. 36 north to La. 435 near Talisheek that connects with the first leg opened last year. Officials said the final segment linking the highway to I-12 will go out for bid in December to boost travel and evacuation routes.  The Times-Picayune
  • Louisiana lawmakers signed 112 bills and sent dozens more to Governor Landry that cover auto insurance, education, food safety, a $51 billion state budget with an extra $1.2 billion for roads and improvements. They passed new rules for unemployment benefits and pharmacy managers—while some measures did not pass and may be revisited in a special session.  The Times-Picayune

  • UNO launched a youth sports program that will allow as many as 7,000 local kids to join in sports during its first year. The program will give local youth different athletic opportunities.  WWL-TV
