COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Adaptive water skiing organization Ski Dawgs will host four summer sessions starting June 21 to give people with various abilities a chance to ski using custom equipment in St. Tammany Parish—volunteers will support safety and run beach operations during the events. Founder David Thomas said the program aims to make water skiing accessible and fun for first-time skiers and returning participants alike.  The Times-Picayune
  • Air Products has donated $175,000 to the Manchac Volunteer Fire Department through its Lake Maurepas Community Fund to support emergency response on Lake Maurepas. The funds will buy a new backup generator, upgrade the firehouse facilities, and convert a truck bay into a training room — actions that build on the company’s continued local support.  AN17

CRIME NEWS

  • Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed SB 58 into law that makes child grooming a crime—grooming means when an adult gains a child's trust to abuse them sexually.  WWL-TV
  • Three people were arrested after detectives searched homes on Brookhaven Court in Slidell and on Hook Street in Abita Springs as part of a fentanyl investigation—police seized over 250 grams of fentanyl along with other drugs, a rifle, and $822, and booked local 35-year-old William Perry with two alleged accomplices.  WGNO
  • Slidell Police credited K9 officer Max with finding the gun linked to the case against Corey Griffin, a man from Vicksburg who was arrested after allegedly shooting at officers during a domestic disturbance on Rivera Drive—additional charges are pending.  WDSU
  • Jamar Howard, 38, and Charenyia Carmouche, 31, of Slidell were indicted on May 30 on twelve counts including conspiracy, wire fraud, false loan applications, money laundering, and drug violations—federal prosecutors said the pair used false documents to secure loans and misused the funds—as the case heads to trial.  AN17

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artist-illustrator-author Joshua Wichterich was chosen to design the official poster for Olde Towne Slidell's ninth annual White Linen and Lagniappe event on Aug. 9, when families and neighbors will shop, dine, and enjoy live music from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. His artwork—Stars, Sweet Tea, and a Slidell Soirée—will appear on all publicity materials as city officials praise his talent and commitment to local culture.  The Times-Picayune
