ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sunday night, St. Tammany Parish deputies rescued people from a burning 45-foot boat on Lake Pontchartrain near Eden Isle — a boater passing by helped get everyone safely off despite the fire's unknown cause.  WWL-TV
  • Several people were rescued after a 45-foot cabin boat caught fire near Eden Isles Sunday night on Lake Pontchartrain; the STPSO Marine Division—working with St. Tammany Fire District No. 1—responded while a nearby boater helped evacuate passengers with no injuries.  WDSU

CRIME NEWS

  • Adrian Waughtal, Mason Fischer, and Michael Lanier will be arraigned for their alleged roles in the death of Sgt. Grant Candies — killed during a police pursuit — after being indicted in June.  WWL-TV
  • Three Slidell teens—Adrian Waughtal, Mason Fischer, and Michael Lanier—entered not guilty pleas Monday for charges in connection with the death of Sgt. Grant Candies, who was killed on March 23 while deploying a spike strip during a chase, and their trial is set for Oct. 6.  WDSU

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mandeville homeowner Wallace Simmons turned to Cleco Power's free Power Wise weatherization program to lower his summer bills, which had reached $700 to $800 because hot attic air forced his cooling system to work overtime. Certified contractors inspect his home for leaks, insulation issues, and duct problems — small repairs and DIY fixes can reduce energy use by 10 to 20%.  WDSU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A tropical disturbance is expected to form offshore—moving into the northeastern Gulf today into Wednesday—and bring heavy rain to Southeast Louisiana. Forecast models show heavy rain may amount to about three to five inches, which could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas.  WDSU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • St. Tammany Parish Council voted unanimously on Thursday to remove the agenda item that would reinstate apartments on 5,946 acres of HC-2 zoning—residents raised concerns over drainage and flood risks while some business groups and developers supported the change. Council members said any future proposal would face a one-month delay and be revisited after a housing study is completed in the fall.  The Times-Picayune
