COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Tammany Parish is collecting an anonymous housing survey from people living and working here as decision-makers plan to address housing needs while Slidell will host a mayoral candidates forum at the Municipal Auditorium on July 23 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Keep Slidell Beautiful has received a grant to finance four new trash receptacles and the Slidell Museum has named historian John Fitzmorris as its summer acting curator—visitors should note the museum will operate on limited hours.  The Times-Picayune
  • Women in east St. Tammany Parish can be nominated for the 2025 Athena Leadership Award or the Athena Young Professional Leadership Award and must submit forms by 5 p.m. on Sept. 5 via email. Nominees will be honored at a 6 p.m. reception on Sept. 24 with winners announced at a luncheon at Pinewood Country Club in Slidell on Nov. 5—advance reservations are required.  The Times-Picayune

BUSINESS NEWS

  • STartUP Northshore is launching a live pitch competition series called The Launchpad to spotlight early startup founders from across the Northshore. The event will take place on Aug. 6 and feature three finalists, coaching and a $5,000 prize pool while applications close July 31 at 11:59 p.m.—organizers aim to support local entrepreneurs.  The Times-Picayune

CRIME NEWS

  • New Orleans police arrested a Slidell man, Richard John Bulot IV, 26, on July 14 for illegally dumping tires and trash near the Michoud Boulevard I-10 exit after a gray 2019 Toyota Tundra linked to the incident was captured on surveillance footage on July 2—he was booked into Central Lockup.  WWL-TV
  • Courtney Candies is coping with back-to-back tragedy after her husband, Sgt. Grant Candies, was killed on March 23 while stopping a fleeing vehicle and her cousin, lineman Wade Singletary, died on July 2 from low-voltage electrocution while on the job — donations have surpassed a $25,000 goal in his honor — and she plans to start a foundation for families of fallen officers as she takes each day at a time.  The Times-Picayune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Maria Nechaeva, a Slidell resident and president of Southeastern Louisiana University’s Student Government Association, was elected by the University of Louisiana System’s Student Advisory Council to serve on the Board of Supervisors for nine campuses—she is a biological sciences major known for her strong leadership in organizing student events and representing their interests.  The Times-Picayune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, the National Hurricane Center said a low pressure area off Florida is moving toward the northeastern Gulf and could become a tropical depression by Thursday—Hurricane Specialist Andrew Hagen noted a 40% chance of development and warned that heavy rains may cause flash flooding. WWL TV Meteorologist Payton Malone explained that if the system spends more time over warm water it could become more organized—if it stays close to land, it will mainly produce heavy rain.  WWL-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tiffany Aidoo recalled the T-shirt she wore on Nov. 17 that marked the start of her journey at Northshore High, where she became the first girl to score 1,000 points and have her number retired. She now works with the Laureus Sports For Good Foundation & appears as a broadcaster for Tulane games, mentoring young athletes across south Louisiana.  The Times-Picayune
