Good morning, Slidell. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 29th of July.

CULTURE NEWS

  • On a recent Wednesday night this summer, 34 women and girls danced at the Lacombe Recreation Center during their weekly soul line dancing class led by Darrel Brown. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Second Harvest Food Bank announced layoffs after losing $9.4 million in federal funds, cutting its workforce by 14% to manage rising costs. The organization said it aimed to continue serving over 436,000 people in 23 parish areas — a move to adjust services amid reduced funding.  WGNO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Aug. 1, Louisiana will ban handheld phone use while driving and drivers will get warnings until Jan. 1, when officers will begin issuing citations—officials say the law is meant to keep roads safe—and emergency responders and 911 calls are exempt. This change will require drivers to use hands-free options to avoid fines.  WGNO
  • The Louisiana Department of Transportation began repairs on the I-10 westbound Airline Hwy. off-ramp Monday after damage from a garbage truck collision, and work will continue until the end of August.
