COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Slidell will mark Katrina's 20th anniversary on Aug. 30 with the Spirit of Louisiana Katrina 20th Anniversary Commemorative Event presented by the city and Krewe of Black & Gold; the program begins at 4 p.m. at Municipal Auditorium and features a second line parade at 5 p.m. led by Storyville Stompers and a community concert at 6 p.m. An art exhibit titled Katrina Then and Now opens on Aug. 29 in the George Dunbar Gallery at City Hall and runs until Sept. 26 to show before-and-after photos of storm-affected areas.  The Times-Picayune
  • East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity will move to a larger building on the Aldersgate campus in Slidell at 360 Robert Road on Aug. 1. Executive Director Kentrell Jones, who was named to the national Habitat council, said the new space will serve as offices—workshops and parking for the group.  The Times-Picayune

CRIME NEWS

  • A 35-year-old Slidell woman named Candace Taylor was charged with Medicaid fraud for receiving benefits while failing to report over $9.5 million in earnings (2020 to 2024).  WWL-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Visit the Northshore will collect an extra penny per dollar from overnight stays in St. Tammany starting Oct. 1 after the Tourist Commission unanimously approved the change on July 15 — a measure aimed at boosting funding for local marketing and supporting area businesses.  The Times-Picayune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries released the deer hunting schedule for 2025—2026, detailing hunting methods from archery to primitive firearms. In some areas, archers will start on Sept. 20th while their season ends on Jan. 31st, 2026—hunters should review the new regulations before heading out.  WGNO

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Louisiana Department of Health reports that Medicaid enrollment fell to about 1.6 million by June—a drop of over 20% from the 2023 peak of 2 million after eligibility checks resumed. Nearly one-third of residents remain on Medicaid, placing Louisiana among the top states for enrollment rates.  Louisiana Radio Network
  • Lakeview Hospital will host a pop-up wellness and shopping event on Aug. 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 95 Judge Tanner Blvd.—almost 50 vendors will offer health screenings, art demos, and giveaway drawings to benefit the hospital's fall prevention program.  The Times-Picayune

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new national report showed 15% of home sales fell apart in June when buyers and sellers could not agree on terms, and local real estate expert Arthur Sterbcow said our market saw about 8—12% of deals fail due to rising repair costs—insurance issues. He explained that many lower priced homes needed repairs and were sold as-is, making it harder for buyers to reach an agreement.  WWL-TV
