- ➤ A Pearl River man was rescued from a St. Tammany Parish marsh on Tuesday, July 29 after his boat became stuck following an engine failure during a crabbing trip (he spent about nine hours in the water) and was brought to medical personnel for evaluation before being taken home. WGNO
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Slidell resident Candace Taylor, 35, was arrested for Medicaid fraud after investigators found she allegedly applied using a false name to collect government benefits while owning profitable businesses—she is accused of using the funds to buy a Lamborghini and an Audi, pay for plastic surgery and is now booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. - ➤ Slidell police arrested two Mississippi men after stopping their vehicle on Old Spanish Trail on Tuesday night for faulty brake lights—officers found $1,500 worth of beef in the car and booked both on felony theft and possession of stolen property charges. WDSU
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Crews began permanent repairs on the I-10 west off-ramp to Airline Highway after a garbage truck collision in May and will work seven days a week until the end of August—this work closes the I-10 west on-ramp from Carrollton Avenue daily from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Times-Picayune
- ➤ Louisiana will close its primaries and change the designation for Independents to 'No Party' on August 1 — a move that ends the Independent Party in the state — and the new rule will require voters to update their registration for future elections. This measure will impact voter alignment in upcoming contests. WWL-TV
- ➤ Louisiana will start new laws on August 1 after Governor Jeff Landry signed 516 bills and vetoed 18. The laws—making kratom a crime, setting rules against grooming children, and updating regulations for gift card scams, slow drivers, taxi licenses, school signs, and utility billing for multifamily homes—also protect veterinary clinics, offer film tax incentives, and add money lessons in high schools.
