ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers from LSU and LUMCON reported that the Gulf dead zone off Louisiana was nearly the size of Connecticut this summer—measuring 4,402 square miles despite being lower than expected yet far above the 2035 goal. Federal proposals may cut EPA grants aimed at reducing nutrient pollution, which could impact local fisheries and marine life.  The Times-Picayune

  • Louisiana banned kratom today as Act 41 takes effect following its approval in the last legislative session. The law prohibits stores from selling the herbal supplement and aims to reduce addiction risks (Senator Jay Morris noted its opioid-like action).  Louisiana Radio Network

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Louisiana Department of Health warned that Vibrio vulnificus—a bacteria living in coastal waters—has infected 17 people, causing hospitalizations and four deaths so far this year. State epidemiologist Teresa Sokol urged anyone with an open wound to avoid saltwater or cover it with a waterproof bandage to lower infection risks.  Louisiana Radio Network
  • Louisiana health officials confirmed 17 cases of Vibrio vulnificus infections—resulting in hospital stays and 4 deaths, which exceeds the state’s annual average—and warned residents to cover and properly clean any open wounds when exposed to coastal water or raw seafood.
