Good morning, Slidell. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 2nd of August.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • National Weather Service meteorologist Megan Williams warned Gulf Coast residents that even though only three storms have formed so far this hurricane season, high sea temperatures and low wind shear mean major hurricanes could develop later. She urged people to secure essential hurricane kits — with water, food, and first aid supplies — as preparations remain key before the season peaks in September.  WWL-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana drivers saw new law changes go into effect on Aug. 1 that affect phone use, left lane driving, window tinting, and insurance rules. The law bans holding a phone while driving with a grace period until Jan. 1, imposes fines up to $350 or jail time for left lane violations, reduces the front window tint limit from 40 to 25, and expands the no pay—no play insurance rule which can block up to $100,000 in damage claims for uninsured drivers.  WDSU
  • A stretch of Highway 90 linking Louisiana and Mississippi has been closed since May 2022 due to unsafe old bridges—local residents and business owners say the loss of traffic has hurt their work and made travel harder. State officials said they will send a joint federal grant application later this fall to help fund a new bridge project estimated at about $300 million—federal funds will decide if the plan moves forward.  The Times-Picayune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Northshore runner Grace Keene won a gold medal in the 1,500-meter race at the AAU Junior Olympics on July 29 in Texas, finishing in 4 minutes and 36.02 seconds, which was more than four seconds ahead of her competitors and 9.56 seconds faster than her finish last summer. She said she will take a break from training before starting high school cross country and fall swimming (a new focus on cross-training).  The Times-Picayune
