- ➤ Benjamin Beale, accused of killing and dismembering Slidell resident Julia Dardar in 2022, has had his trial delayed— a new trial date is set for Sept. 29 at Orleans Criminal Court. WGNO
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ LSU Health climatologist Barry Keim warned that Louisiana is entering the most active part of hurricane season as above-normal sea surface temperatures may fuel severe storms in late August or early September — residents should monitor updates and prepare for hurricanes. WWL-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries announced that honorably discharged military veteran residents can buy a combined hunting and fishing license for $20, a discount from the usual price. Lafayette Senator Brach Myers, who worked with the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs, said the law honors military service and encourages veterans to enjoy the outdoors. - ➤ Louisiana’s Office of Motor Vehicles will upgrade its 50-year-old computer systems to cut long wait times. The signed contract means a vendor will be on site next week—launching a full roll-out expected to take about two years with some locations updating sooner. WWL-TV
- ➤ The St. Tammany Parish Council will consider a resolution on August 7 asking the Louisiana Public Service Commission to block Magnolia Water from expanding its system—Council member Arthur Laughlin said the measure responds to local complaints over higher bills and poor water quality. Residents near Slidell reported brown, smelly water and more boil advisories since Magnolia took over—other council members questioned the resolution’s scope. The Times-Picayune
