  • The Children's Advocacy Center—Hope House in Covington is offering free classes and workshops to train adults to spot signs of abuse and protect children. The programs include internet safety training on Oct. 15 and a familial trafficking session on Aug. 19, among other courses held at 223 W. 28th Ave.  The Times-Picayune

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lyba Murphy, a talented art student from Southeastern Louisiana University, will display six magical paintings at the White Linen & Lagniappe event on Aug. 9 in Olde Towne—she aims to launch her art career. The free event runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will feature works by other local artists.  The Times-Picayune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Incoming Principal George Herdliska began his role at Slidell High today—bringing over 15 years of teaching and coaching experience and a deep connection to the local community as he prepares the school for a new block scheduling system and updated teacher evaluations. He aims to build a welcoming environment while addressing the challenges of change amid the start of the 2025-26 school year.  The Times-Picayune
  • Keri Krycki, a mental health provider at Fifth Ward Junior High in Bush, was honored by the St. Tammany School Board on July 17 as a statewide finalist for the School Health Service Provider of the Year program sponsored by the Louisiana Department of Education—she has served since 2018 and also coaches Girls on the Run.  The Times-Picayune
  • Jeff Polito, a theater teacher at Fontainebleau High in Mandeville, was honored with the H. Norman Saurage III Service Award for 25 years of teaching and community service—he also leads Action Youth and Community Resources to expand local programs for youth leadership and community engagement across St. Tammany Parish.  The Times-Picayune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new Louisiana law started last Friday to stop death row convicts from delaying their appeals. Slidell Representative Brian Glorioso said the change will speed up deadlines for death row cases — giving victims’ families quicker closure while still allowing DNA testing.  Louisiana Radio Network
