CRIME NEWS

  • A 63-year-old man from Mandeville was sentenced to 40 years in prison without parole on August 6 for sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl — his conviction came after a June jury trial for sexual battery — District Attorney Collin Sims reported.  AN17

CULTURE NEWS

  • A 9-year-old golden Labrador retriever named Shirley was cast as Sandy in Cutting Edge Theater’s production of Annie alongside 12-year-old Addison Fiedler who plays Duffy. The dog was adopted from Minnesota after a friend persuaded the Fiedler family—she now adds charm to the stage performances.  The Times-Picayune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Young Entrepreneurs Academy will offer a 24-week after-school program this fall for northshore students in grades 7 to 12 to learn how to create business plans and pitch ideas for funding—similar to a Shark Tank contest. Classes will be held each Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Small Business Development Center in Hammond, with applications accepted until Sept. 7 and classes starting Sept. 17.  The Times-Picayune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tropical Storm Erin is forecast to strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane by Saturday—making it the first major hurricane of the season—while heavy rain from Gulf thunderstorms will bring flash flooding risks to New Orleans Tuesday to Thursday. Residents along the Gulf Coast should stay alert even though the storm poses no immediate threat to Louisiana.  The Times-Picayune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Older Americans Act in St. Tammany Parish as COAST supports over 2,800 seniors with meals, rides, and other essential services—Board President Martin Lapari said the programs help maintain independence and quality of life.  The Times-Picayune

  • Hurricane season is here and experts say a strong roof is the first line of defense against storm damage—homeowners are urged to upgrade their roofs with precise engineering to reduce high insurance costs and boost insurer confidence.  WWL-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Boots vs. Badges Softball Tournament will take place on Saturday, Aug 16 at Coquille Park in Covington where check-in starts at 8 a.m. and games begin at 8:30 a.m.—teams from Slidell, Mandeville, Goodbee, New Orleans and parish government will play round robin before moving to an elimination bracket. A second event at the Calamari Tennis Center will have Slidell Police and Fire departments compete starting at 9 a.m. as a new trophy is commissioned for the winner, weather permitting.  The Times-Picayune
  • Rookie Tyler Shough played in Sunday's preseason game against the Chargers when the Saints lost 27-13; he threw for 165 yards and hit a 54-yard touchdown that helped narrow the gap with Spencer Rattler. The team will play on Sunday at noon in the Superdome.  FOX 8
