- ➤ A permanent Hurricane Katrina memorial will be dedicated under live oaks at Camp Salmen near Slidell on Aug. 29, with a ceremony beginning at 9 a.m.—featuring remarks from St. Tammany Parish leaders, a reading by Louisiana Poet Laureate Alison Pelegrin, and a song by Broadway actress Ava Johnson at the park entrance. - ➤ A former administrator at Northlake Christian School near Covington was indicted on Aug. 20 for allegedly stealing over $25,000 in a series of thefts—school officials notified parents and made staffing changes after her dismissal last year. The Times-Picayune

- ➤ WDSU anchor Elizabeth Kuebel, a Northshore native who was 11 during Katrina, recalled how her family stayed in a hospital because her father cared for patients and they saw the storm snap pine trees—despite their Mandeville home being untouched. - ➤ The Environmental Protection Agency is leading the emergency response at Smitty’s Supply in Roseland—workers are containing hazardous materials, recovering unburned substances from ditches, ponds, and the Tangipahoa River, and monitoring a fire that is 90% contained while nearby school closures and evacuations remain in effect. - ➤ Louisiana Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser supported a 10-cent-per-pound inspection fee on imported seafood after a recall of radioactive shrimp sold at Walmart triggered federal warnings, and he sent a letter urging congressional support to improve safety. The recall, linked to cesium contamination from an Indonesian company, has raised concerns over seafood safety in our state. WGNO
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Chalmette earned an undefeated district title last season and will defend its crown with many returning starters including quarterback Breez Wilson — the team plans to go deeper in the playoffs.
