COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officers in Slidell recalled Hurricane Katrina as the storm tore back the sky and the lake swallowed the interstate, forcing them to use any means available to rescue residents. Officer Rodney West and Sergeant Alfred led efforts in neighborhoods like Lincoln Park and Washington Heights—risking their own safety while keeping people from harm.  WDSU
  • St. Tammany Parish Animal Services shelter in Lacombe has partnered with NBC Universal’s nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign — lowering adoption fees to $35 for dogs and $30 for cats — to help more local families adopt pets and support the shelter’s no-kill goal.  The Times-Picayune
  • The Northshore Humane Society will host its annual Unleashed! Rescue Me Gala on Oct 4 at Covington Country Club — proceeds will fund a new facility near its current no-kill site.  The Times-Picayune

CRIME NEWS

  • Calvin U. Brown III was convicted by a St. Tammany Parish jury of ambushing and shooting his estranged wife four times in 2022 in an attempted second-degree murder case—supported by surveillance footage, phone records, and data from his Apple watch—and he will be sentenced on Oct. 15 with up to 50 years in prison.  The Times-Picayune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eileen deHaro, League of Women Voters president and St. Tammany elections commissioner, urged voters to check their registration as new voting laws now require proof of citizenship and alter absentee ballot rules—changes that also shift former Independent registrations to No Party. Voters are advised to update their information ahead of the Oct. 11 election to avoid any confusion at the polls.  The Times-Picayune
  • Former mayor Ben Morris spent his second term running Slidell from FEMA trailers after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city—he returned to a rebuilt City Hall three weeks before leaving office. He recalled facing widespread damage to homes and businesses and dealing with issues like eviction notices from FEMA during the crisis.  The Times-Picayune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lakeshore football will start the season after last year’s quarterfinal run with seniors Dylan Cusachs and Oudrey Gros returning to play both offense and defense; head coach Brent Indest said the team is set to use a new play system (led by new quarterback Brody Loudermilk) to improve efficiency on the field.  The Times-Picayune
