COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Covington attorney Richard Ducote was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 30th International Summit on Violence Abuse and Trauma in San Diego last month for his 47 years of work protecting abused women and children—marking his fifth national honor that includes a Purple Ribbon award from domestic violence groups.  The Times-Picayune

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ayu Bakehouse's co-owner and chef was named one of Food and Wine magazine's best new chefs—an honor that recognizes his culinary skill and may boost business at the bakehouse.  WWL-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Surveillance video shows that a Northshore nurse, Belinda Skelly, was run over by a coworker outside Greenbriar Community Care Center and was taken to the ICU—her family rallies around her for support.  WWL-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The St. Tammany Mosquito Abatement District filed a disciplinary complaint against District Attorney Collin Sims on Aug. 20 for a conflict of interest and misuse of funds during his review of the mosquito district’s finances for its transparency committee—accusing him of an invasive investigation. Board member Terri Lewis Stevens resigned on Sept. 5 amid pressure from parish officials, and Sims has not yet responded—an agency meeting is set for Sept. 18.  The Times-Picayune
  • On Sept. 9, the Slidell City Council amended the city ordinance to regulate pop-up vendor events on private land, requiring a permit application and site plan submission 30 days before the event. The new rules limit event hours to 7 a.m.—10 p.m. and mandate food safety certificates and permits for alcohol sales.  The Times-Picayune
  • Gov. Landry and state fisheries officials criticized the federal move to end the commercial amberjack season, saying it forces Louisiana's fishermen into a tough choice & that state data shows abundant amberjack. The state declared an emergency that ended its commercial season and said recreational fishing will remain open through October 31 if the federal season is closed.  The Times-Picayune

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Sept. 12, Brother Martin defeated St. Paul's 37-27 as junior receiver Easton Royal led the game with 243 yards and three touchdowns and added a passing score that put the contest out of reach. St. Paul's struggled to overcome penalties and errors after trading early scoring plays.  The Times-Picayune
  • Slidell’s Tigers started their season 2-0 for the first time in 11 years by beating Livingston Collegiate Academy 42-27 on Sept. 12 at L.V. McGinty Sr. Stadium—junior Ja’Kwan Jones ran 173 yards with two touchdowns while quarterback Ricky Williams III threw four, and coach Damon Page said the team will continue to improve.  The Times-Picayune
  • Edna Karr and American Heritage will face off in a nationally ranked matchup at Caesars Superdome today—fans expect a tightly contested football game as both teams prepare for a crucial win.  FOX 8
  • High school football in Southeast Louisiana on Friday night featured a nail-biting contest between Lutcher and St. Charles Catholic—other key matchups included Booker T. Washington vs. McDonogh and E.D. White vs. Jesuit as prep teams competed for local bragging rights.  WWL-TV
  • The Fontainebleau football team earned its first win on Sept. 12 when it beat Madison High 50-12, led by sophomore Sawyer Shane who rushed for two touchdowns and intercepted a pass early in the game—Coach John Kavanaugh said Shane’s play boosted team confidence. The Bulldogs will build on this victory in upcoming games.  The Times-Picayune
  • Amtrak has announced that it will add extra train cars to the Mardi Gras line for upcoming Saints home game weekends to help serve more fans. The service upgrade aims to ease travel—reducing crowd congestion during busy game days.  FOX 8
