- ➤ The second annual Tailgate Fest will take place this Saturday at Urban South Brewery—this free, family-friendly event combines football, food and fun to support a good cause. WWL-TV
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Children’s Museum of St. Tammany will preview a new migrating butterfly exhibit on Sept. 23 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. The exhibit was created by Talented Arts school programs and features a roost by Slidell artist Josh Wichterich — it will be shown above the ARTworks Gallery at 813 Florida St., Suite A. - ➤ Slidell Little Theatre will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Rocky Horror Picture Show on Sept. 19th and 20th with an adult shadow cast experience and a pre-show party starting at 9 p.m.—tickets are available for those over 18 as the event serves as a fundraiser and marks a milestone for the theatre. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The St. Tammany Parish School Board approved a budget of over $500 million for the 2025-26 fiscal year during a meeting on Sept. 11; the plan sets aside funds for employee salaries plus teacher retirement and insurance while splitting a $16.3 million surplus equally between staff bonuses and a reserve for unexpected costs. The full board adopted the budget unanimously. The Times-Picayune
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Slidell Mayor Bill Borchet announced that the planned 1 percent sales tax for the Northshore Square Mall redevelopment will be reduced to 0.07 to make the rate nearly neutral for the expanded district. He said private investors (with a purchase agreement for two large box stores) will lead the project, and the city has withdrawn its Bond Commission request. WDSU
- ➤ A St. Tammany Parish committee voted for a council structure change—12 district members and two at-large members—instead of reducing its size from 14, citing concerns about rural and minority representation. The recommendation, introduced by Council member Joe Impastato, will be reviewed by the full council with redistricting set after the 2030 Census. The Times-Picayune
- ➤ Gov. Jeff Landry and the LED head made an announcement Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m.—few details were provided about the new economic measures aimed at attracting business. WGNO
- ➤ City officials announced Tuesday that Slidell ended plans to buy the largely empty North Shore Square Mall site after discovering that a local investor had signed a purchase agreement for part of the mall—officials said the city will let private investors lead redevelopment while adjusting local tax measures. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ State health officials said Louisiana recorded 360 whooping cough cases and two infant deaths — the worst outbreak in 30 years, leading doctors to urge parents to vaccinate and watch for early signs. Parents have since taken extra care to protect their children against the illness. WDSU
