COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal will host his annual Wild Game, Seafood and BBQ Cook-Off on Oct. 4 at Olde Towne—where cooking teams will compete from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. while raising funds for Community Christian Concern that helps locals in need.  The Times-Picayune
  • On Sept. 15, East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity dedicated a classroom at its new headquarters to honor Debbie Crouch for her commitment to homeowner education. Debbie, who served as executive director from 2008 to 2017, continued to meet volunteers for coffee—reflecting her caring spirit—until weeks before she died.  The Times-Picayune
  • Volunteer Matthew Willie prepares the St. Tammany Parish Fair by arriving early to set up portable toilets & security and staying late to secure the fairgrounds. He manages the rodeo and aims to have more east side residents participate, continuing his family tradition of community service.  The Times-Picayune
  • Saints linebacker Demario Davis and his wife, Tamela Davis, are hosting their annual Dining for Dreams fundraiser with some Saints players joining the event to raise money for local causes—community members are encouraged to attend.  WWL-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The St. Tammany Chamber will host its annual Explore Northshore Business Expo on Oct. 16 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at The Harbor Center in Slidell—featuring nearly 100 businesses, a Young Professionals Summit with free 30-minute sessions and a Business Growth luncheon with speaker Michael Hecht, along with an on-site blood drive.  The Times-Picayune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The EPA launched an interactive website that updates local residents on the cleanup after the explosion and fire at Smitty’s fire by showing that over five million gallons of material have been recovered and detailing progress for areas such as Serenity Sands — Highway 22 — River Collection Point — Lee’s Landing.  FOX 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Incumbent mayor Bill Borchert—who took office after former mayor Greg Cromer resigned to work in state government—is running to complete the unexpired term while Police Chief Randy Fandal also seeks the position. The election will be held on Oct. 11 with early voting from Sept. 27 to Oct. 4.  FOX 8
  • State leaders have approved Act 67 to fine litterers as park rangers now have the authority to enforce litter laws across Louisiana—residents can report violations via a state hotline and first offenses carry fines from $175 to $1,000 plus court costs. Officials said the tougher approach is part of a broader effort to clean up communities and will be followed by a future waterways cleanup campaign.  WGNO
  • Authorities renamed the I-10 stretch near Oak Harbor exits as Sgt. Grant Candies Memorial Highway to honor the sergeant who died on March 23 while deploying a spike strip. New signs show the change—three teens, including 17-year-old Mason Fischer, were indicted on murder and manslaughter charges after the crash.  WWL-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lisa Burlingame will join the NAMI Southeast Louisiana Mental Health Awareness Walk at Audubon Park on Oct. 4 to honor her late husband—she walks for her family and to help others with mental health challenges. She works as a certified peer specialist at Northlake Behavioral and uses her own story to guide teenagers and community members.  The Times-Picayune
