- ➤ James Checchio, bishop of Metuchen, New Jersey, was introduced as the new archbishop of New Orleans at a press briefing at Notre Dame seminary yesterday—he will serve as coadjutor to Archbishop Gregory Aymond until the archdiocese resolves its bankruptcy case related to past abuse claims. - ➤ Pope Leo XIV has appointed a new archbishop—Aymond’s successor—to lead the New Orleans archdiocese, and church officials say he will soon assume his new duties. FOX 8
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Slidell City Council on Tuesday voted 8-0 to cancel two special sales taxes set to fund a potential purchase of the North Shore Square Mall—although the taxes will still apply from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31. Officials now let private investors lead after backing away from buying the mall amid ongoing debate. The Times-Picayune
- ➤ St. Tammany Chamber PAC began an investigation Tuesday into parish government budget, accounting, and communications practices after a failed dedication tax ballot, finding misleading revenue figures — nearly 70 percent of District 3 Sales Tax funds were reportedly misallocated. The group will release a full report once the inquiry is completed. AN17
- ➤ Louisiana is one of nine states swapping voter rolls with Texas to prevent duplicate registrations and keep voter lists accurate—Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson said the secure process protects voter data.
